The Government of India has announced a significant expansion of its flagship income support scheme for farmers—Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan)—in the 2025 Union Budget. With the aim of delivering greater economic stability to rural households, the scheme has been revised to increase the annual payout from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 and to include tenant farmers and sharecroppers under its ambit.
The revised PM-Kisan Yojana is being hailed as a critical step toward inclusive and sustainable agricultural development.

📌 Key Changes in PM-Kisan 2025
- Increased Financial Assistance
- Farmers will now receive ₹8,000 per year in four equal installments of ₹2,000 each.
- The increase is aimed at countering rising input costs, particularly fertilizers and diesel.
- Expanded Eligibility
- Previously limited to landholding farmers, the scheme now includes:
- Tenant farmers
- Sharecroppers
- Tribal farmers with forest land use rights
- Aadhar-based verification and local panchayat certification will be used to identify eligible beneficiaries.
- Previously limited to landholding farmers, the scheme now includes:
- Digital Monitoring Dashboard
- A new PM-Kisan Portal 2.0 has been launched with real-time beneficiary tracking, payment status, and grievance redressal.
- SMS alerts and mobile app notifications will keep farmers updated.
🌾 Current Reach and Impact
Since its inception in 2019, PM-Kisan has transferred over ₹2.8 lakh crore directly into the bank accounts of more than 11 crore farmers. The revamped version is expected to benefit up to 14 crore rural households, making it one of the world’s largest direct benefit transfer (DBT) schemes in agriculture.
The scheme provides crucial support during sowing and harvesting seasons, when farmers face the highest financial burden.
👩🌾 Farmer Testimonials
Rajesh Kumar, a marginal farmer from Bihar, welcomed the change:
“This will help me buy quality seeds and fertilizers without taking loans. The inclusion of tenant farmers is a big relief.”
